On November 1st and 2nd, two teachers from the Bay Waveland Middle School, Connie Roth and Shelley Dalrymple, visited Needham. They talked with 8th graders at Pollard and the 9th graders at Needham High.
On Thursday evening, November 1st, there was an open meeting at the Needham Historical Society. Connie and Shelley talked about their experiences living through Hurricane Katrina in a school setting, returning to the shell of a home the next day, the impact on the children, returning to school months later and the progress (or lack thereof) that has been made since.
Shelley Dalrymple says "Rebuilding continues steadily, although slowly. Every week there are visible signs of regrowth. Volunteers are still coming, but they are fewer in number. It is difficult to sustain media attention after 2 years. Our community values the assistance of volunteers more than anyone could ever know."
Note: Needham Women's Club member Helen Gregory went to Mississippi in July 2006. Jane Howard traveled to Mississippi in January 2007. See pictures below from the January trip.
