QPR Suicide Prevention Training for Adults/Parents

Over the past few years, the
Needham community has experienced several suicides that have impacted the town on many levels. In an effort to learn more about this topic and be of support to a person in distress, the Needham Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Needham Youth Commission are offering QPR trainings. Investigate the myths surrounding suicide, explore the signs of suicide, discover the differences between suicide and self injury, and learn how to help to a person in distress
The QPR Suicide Prevention model (Question, Persuade, Refer) is based upon the following concepts:
  • Those who most need help in a suicidal crisis are the least likely to ask for it;
  • The person most likely to prevent a person dying by suicide is someone they  already know; and
  • That prior to making a suicide attempt, a person typically sends warning signs of their distress and suicidal intent to those around them.

Choose  only  one  of  the  following training  dates:

Wednesday, November 5, 2008 (7:00pm)

Wednesday, January 21, 2009 (7:00pm)

Tuesday, March 24, 2009
(7:00pm)

 Training is free of charge

Space is limited to 25 participants

Needham’s Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program is seeking volunteers

We can’t do it without you.

Each year CAP volunteer Prevention Specialists present 60 workshops to students in Needham’s first, third and fifth grade classrooms. Working in teams of 3, we teach Needham children that they have the right to be Safe, Strong and Free with their friends and peers, with adult strangers, and with those who are trusted to take care of them. Using simple and age appropriate language we address bullying, stranger safety, and sexual assault by known persons.

We are looking for parents who are interested in becoming volunteer Prevention Specialists. Please join us. The next training will begin in October. We will be offering a series of 3- hour morning and evening training sessions. CAP volunteers include parents of pre-school and school- aged children, professionals and retirees who are interested in child safety, and who can contribute 6 hours per month for one school year, October - May.

For more information about this training, please call Gail Sommer, CAP Director (781) 444-2415 or by email, cap@needhamcommunitycouncil.org

A new parent program from the Needham Youth Commission
in collaboration with YMCA-Charles River Branch

Are you a stay-at-home parent ?
Blending the roles of parent, partner, and planner can test your sanity

Staying at home to raise children is something you wouldn't change for the world -- but blending your role as parent, partner, chauffeur, and master scheduler can sometimes drive you to the brink of exhaustion (and sanity).  Explore issues such as managing your relationship with your partner, raising healthy children, and taking care of yourself with facilitator Susan Patkin, LICSW (and the mother of three elementary school age children).
Join with other parents of children Kindergarten to 3rd grade to talk about the ups, downs, and wonderment of being a stay at home parent. The details...

·
FREE (thanks to funding from Middlesex Savings Bank)
·              You must attend all four sessions (child care is available onsite)
·              Group limited to ten participants
·              Come to hear how other parents are coping with similar challenges and to share your experiences
