What can you learn in an hour? Maybe enough to save someone’s life.
QPR Suicide Prevention Training for Adults/Parents
Over the past few years, the Needham community has experienced several suicides that have impacted the town on many levels. In an effort to learn more about this topic and be of support to a person in distress, the Needham Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Needham Youth Commission are offering QPR trainings. Investigate the myths surrounding suicide, explore the signs of suicide, discover the differences between suicide and self injury, and learn how to help to a person in distress The QPR Suicide Prevention model (Question, Persuade, Refer) is based upon the following concepts:
- Those who most need help in a suicidal crisis are the least likely to ask for it;
- The person most likely to prevent a person dying by suicide is someone they already know; and
- That prior to making a suicide attempt, a person typically sends warning signs of their distress and suicidal intent to those around them.
Choose only one of the following training dates:
Tuesday, April 8, 2008 (7:00pm) Space will be limited to 15 participants for each session To register, please e-mail Youth Commission Director Jon Mattleman at: jmattleman@town.needham.ma.us or call 781-455-7518 x265

Needham’s Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program is seeking volunteers
We can’t do it without you.
Each year CAP volunteer Prevention Specialists present 60 workshops to students in Needham’s first, third and fifth grade classrooms. Working in teams of 3, we teach Needham children that they have the right to be Safe, Strong and Free with their friends and peers, with adult strangers, and with those who are trusted to take care of them. Using simple and age appropriate language we address bullying, stranger safety, and sexual assault by known persons.
We are looking for parents who are interested in becoming volunteer Prevention Specialists. Please join us. The next training will begin in October. We will be offering a series of 3- hour morning and evening training sessions. CAP volunteers include parents of pre-school and school- aged children, professionals and retirees who are interested in child safety, and who can contribute 6 hours per month for one school year, October - May.
For more information about this training, please call Gail Sommer, CAP Director (781) 444-2415 or by email, cap@needhamcommunitycouncil.org

Weaving a Web of Safety - The Parental Thread
Several club members have already hosted or been guests at one of these coffees which are an outgrowth of Deb Engler's new role at Needham High School as the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Counselor. Parents invite other parents of their child's friends and Deb Engler presents startling information about drug and alcohol use here in Needham and elsewhere. Conversation between parents is encouraged and all parents who attend comment that they learned something. If you would like to host a coffee in your home in the fall of 2007 or attend a coffee, please email Deb Engler at Deborah_Engler@needham.k12.ma.us.
